WHAT
IT FEELS LIKE FOR A MADONNA FAN

Madonna
has done it again. In the past, her Pepsi commercial was dropped
because the video for "Like A Prayer" was considered blasphemous;
her "Justify My Love" video was banned from MTV for being
too sexy; and her book "SEX" was criticized as being way too
raunchy for most people's tastes. So, what were the results?
"Like A Prayer" was one of Madonna's biggest hits, the "Justify
My Love" video single sold 8 million copies, and "SEX" was
a runaway best seller. It seems that controversy only helps
Madonna become more visible and successful.
Even in 2001, Madonna still can't stop making headlines in
addition to music. The video for her new song "What It
Feels Like For a Girl," directed by Mr. Madonna-- uh, I mean Guy
Ritchie, only played once on MTV and VH1 due to being "too
violent" by some, "too controversial" by others. Can somebody
please tell me what all the fuss was about? Did I miss something?
In the video, Madonna jumps in the car along with an elderly
woman and goes for a wild drive through town. On the way,
she attacks a man at a cash machine with a stun gun, squirts
water pistols at two policemen, and... most shocking of all,
joins the old lady in having a cigarette. Toward the end we
get a glimpse at her motive: she's seeking... well, forget
it. I'm not giving away the ending, and anyway, the video
is open for different interpretations.
On March 29 at Pop
Rocks, the new Thursday night party at Flamingo Club (Second
Ave and 14th St) in Manhattan, there was a party to celebrate
Madonna's new single. Over 250 Madonna fans flooded the club's
top floor to see the new video and win free CD's and posters.
The banned video was played every hour, on the hour, on a
huge video screen. In between "What It Feels Like For
a Girl,"
we got to see many of Madonna's hit videos, from "Lucky
Star"
and "Borderline" to "Music" and "Ray
of Light." And since
this was a Madonna party, there was a generous share of Madonna
drag queens, luscious lesbians, and hot young gay boyz. Oh,
yeah, there were a few straights too, mostly people who graduated
high school in 1989 or 1990 and started liking Madonna when
they were too young to even get into a nightclub.
By banning Madonna's new video, MTV and VH1 have virtually
guaranteed that more and more people will try hard to see
it. Bootleg VHS copies were on sale on eBay
the day right after it was broadcast. For those who want to
do it the legal way, Warner is releasing a DVD video single
on April 24th. Which may have been the plan all along...
Pop Rocks is a great Thursday night young gay hot spot for
pop and Top 40 music. On the main floor they played Britney,
Christina Aguilera, Ricky Martin, Destiny's Child, and the
boy bands all night long. Check out www.poprocksnyc.com
