The Long Island GLBT Community Loses a
Great Advocate
By Louis Trapani
It
is with sadness that we report the news of the passing
of a friend and a community advocate, Bill Borman (William
J. Borman, Esq.) on Thursday, August 7, 2003. Many
of us remember Bill when
played a major role in CERF-PAC, he later went on to
form the Nassau County Lesbian and Gay Democrats. He
had been serving on the boards of Gay
and Lesbian Foundation of Long Island (GALFOLI),
the Long
Island Crisis Center,
and the Empire
State Pride Agenda (ESPA). He also served on the
Nassau County Human Rights Commission. Bill is also a
past contributor
here on Long Island Community Konnection
(LICKtheWeb.com).
On
a personal note, having
worked with Bill in the community, there is no denying
the passion he had for the betterment of the GLBT community.
Years ago I commented to him that his style reminded
me of a captain of a large ship in rough seas, though
he just laughed it off. His heart was in everything he
was involved with, his passion contagious, all the while
being strong and unwilling to back down from a fight
when it came down standing up to what he believed in.
He
will be greatly missed by many. Our sympathy is extended
to all his family and friends.
There
will be visitation at the Leo Kearns Funeral Home, 445
East Meadow Avenue, East Meadow, NY (Telephone
516-794-0500) this Saturday, August 9, 2003, between 7PM
and 9PM and again on Sunday, August 10, 2003, between
2PM and 4PM and 7PM and 9PM.
A
Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, August 11, 2003,
at the Sacred Heart
Church on Merrick Avenue in North Merrick,
NY. (Exit 24N from the Southern State Parkway.) (Details
will be published in the Saturday and Sunday editions of
the New York Times and Newsday.)
At
the time of this writing, there are some initial plans
of possibly having a community memorial service to
celebrate Bill's life. See our Upcoming
Events section for details on "A
Tribute: Celebrating the Life of Bill Borman."
